The series begun in the 70s and is not just a study on shadows but the only type of self-portraits Fontana has ever indulged in. Parallel, yet not informed by, Friedlander’s research in black&white, they spark from the common, human need to establish one’s own identity, record their presence, and at the same time exercise a fleeting, illusionary ownership on a fragment of reality.
