Lillian Bassmann:
Redefining Fashion

27 February - 18 April 2020
Curators: Caterina Mestrovich, Ben Burdett
Atlas Gallery, London

Renowned for her modernising influence on the post-war fashion industry, Lillian Bassman (1917-2012) worked as a fashion photographer and art editor at Harper’s Bazaar in the 1950s – 1970s.

Become famous for her high-contrast images of society women, actresses and models, Bassman reworked her early negatives in the 1990s, accentuating the stylised vision she had been exploring in her early career making carefully over-exposed, abstract, luminous, soft yet captivatingly dramatic images. The models become silhouettes, consumed by blankets of light and darkness
