Fontana’s signature style is most fully expressed in his Landscapes. The luminous fields of Puglia, Basilicata and Spain come alive under his gaze, while his deliberate, often radical cropping transforms familiar scenes into near-abstractions. He embraced colour photography at a time when it was still dismissed by much of the art world, which upheld black and white as the only legitimate artistic language. His bold chromatic vision and distilled compositions have frequently been likened to Colour Field painting, and today his works are held in many of the world’s leading museum collections.
